Overwhelmed With Ancient History Planning? Start Here: A Simple 3-Step Framework to Get Control Back
If you’re feeling like you’re constantly "jumping in the deep end" with your ancient history planning, I have good news: you don’t need a miracle to get your weekends back. You just need a starting point.
I’m a big believer that it’s not about the content being too "hard" - it’s about organizing the information into a structure that makes sense to kids (and you!).
Before you spend another late night scrolling for "fun" activities, try this simple 3-step framework to regain control of your classroom.
Step 1: Map the Essentials
Pick just one civilization you have coming up. Instead of looking at a 500-page textbook, ask yourself: What are the essential concepts my students MUST walk away with? In my classroom, I use a 7-part structure (Location, Government, Religion, etc.) to keep things focused. When you know exactly what the goal is, you stop wasting time on "fluff" that doesn't move the needle.
Step 2: Audit Your Weak Spots
Be honest with yourself—where did things feel "clunky" last year?
Identify the one area that caused you the most stress and decide right now that you’re going to simplify it.
- Was the pacing off (did you spend three weeks on Mesopotamia and then have to rush through Rome)?
- Was the engagement low?
- Or were the assessments a nightmare to grade?
Identify the one area that caused you the most stress and decide right now that you’re going to simplify it.
Step 3: Build a Repeatable Routine
Middle schoolers crave predictability. Instead of reinventing your lesson style every day, create a "plug-and-play" structure:
- Lesson Hook (get their attention) & Review What They Already Know
- Direct Instruction (keep it streamlined)
- Processing Activity (let them work with the info in a notebook or foldable)
- Quick Check (did they get it?)
Bonus Tip: Batch Your Planning
Stop planning day-to-day. It is the fastest way to burn out. Try to sit down and map out an entire unit at once. When you look at the "big picture" calendar, the activities start to fill themselves in naturally.
Want the "Already Done" Version?
This 3-step framework is exactly what I used to build the Ancient Civilizations Curriculum Club. I spent years in the classroom refining this system so you don’t have to.
If you’re ready to stop the "scavenger hunt" for lessons and want daily, ready-made plans that give you back your time and sanity, I’d love to have you in the Club.
