You Don’t Have to Prove Yourself by Doing Everything Alone: Why Good Teachers Use Good Curriculum

Can we have a "teacher-to-teacher" heart-to-heart for a second?

There’s this unspoken rule in education that "good teachers" build everything from scratch. We feel this weird pressure to hand-craft every map, every lecture, and every assessment. We think that if we didn't spend four hours on a Sunday afternoon reinventing the wheel, we’re somehow "cheating" or being lazy.

You Don’t Have to Prove Yourself by Doing Everything Alone: Why Good Teachers Use Good Curriculum

I’ve been there. I remember the stress, the worry, and the long hours I put in during my years in the classroom. I fought so hard to be the "expert" that I almost missed the point.

But here is a truth I had to learn the hard way: No one is winning awards for exhaustion.

Burnout is Not a Badge of Honor
For years, my identity was "Teacher" first and everything else second. I mentored new teachers, served on every committee, and even wrote curriculum for my district. People saw a confident teacher, but behind the scenes, I was hitting my breaking point.

Burnout isn’t a sign that you’re a dedicated teacher—it’s what pushes great educators out of the profession. Your goal isn’t to build lesson plans forever: your goal is to reach your students.

Defining "Good Teaching"
Let’s reframe this. Great teachers don’t have to invent from nothing. Great teachers:

  • Adapt high-quality resources to fit their specific kids.
  • Improve on existing structures to make them clearer.
  • Personalize the instruction to meet students where they are.

When you use a solid curriculum backbone, you aren't being "replaced." You’re being partnered with. You’re freeing up your mental energy to do the things only you can do: build relationships, provide feedback, and inspire your 6th graders to love history.

You Deserve a Life Outside the Classroom
For me, "living your best life" eventually meant leaving my career in Alaska, selling our home, and traveling in an RV to spend quality time with my husband. I realized there was more to me than just being a teacher of one classroom.

You deserve to enjoy your weekends with your family without the constant hum of "I should be lesson planning" in the back of your mind.

Let's Do This Together
The Ancient Civilizations Curriculum Club exists to take the heavy lifting off your plate. It’s not about taking away your voice -  it’s about giving you the tools to use it more effectively.

Stop trying to prove yourself by doing it all alone. You are already a great teacher. Now, let's make sure you stay one - without burning out.
