Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

Fostering a growth mindset in the classroom is a fundamental key to academic success.

According to psychologists at Stanford and Columbia Universities, how you think about intelligence can affect your success in school.

Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

Generally, those students who believe that intelligence can be developed and improved do better in school than students who believe that intelligence is fixed – something you can’t change.

Growth Mindset
Students who are of a growth mindset believe that academic success is due to effort and hard work.

These students are excited to take on a new challenge and focus on the strategy and process rather than the end outcome.

Fixed Mindset
Those who have a fixed mindset often believe that success is beyond their control.  Either they can do it – or they can’t. And if they can’t do it, they figure there is no use in trying.

Fixed mindset students are quick to avoid challenges and give up easily.

They frequently have excuses for failure and see it as something that will never change.

Statements like “I can’t do math.” Are common among fixed mindset students.

Mindset in the Classroom
What do you think? Growth mindset vs fixed mindset?  It seems the answer should be fairly obvious which we would prefer. But it’s important to recognize which we are often dealing with.

In order to ensure academic success for all students, a teacher’s first battle is mindset and helping students believe they are capable of achieving great things.

But this is no small battle.  One small failure can bring a student back to their fixed mindset in an instant, as it simply confirms what they believe they’ve known all along.

Part of the battle includes teachers helping students understand that mistakes are part of the learning process. Failure is part of the hard work and effort. Which means teachers must be providing opportunity for students to practice content without fear of earning a bad grade.

There is a time and place for students to demonstrate their knowledge and earn traditional grades. But first they must be given the opportunity to process new information through practice, which will help to foster a growth mindset.

With a growth mindset, students become open to learning new skills that will help them become better students.

"My students have been struggling with study skills and I purchased this product to help improve my knowledge about how to teach my students study skills. This was a great purchase. It helped me to see small changes that I could add to my teaching routines and lessons to help my students with study skills in my class and prepare them for future grades/classes."
