This is a great time to take students to the next level and challenge them!
To set students up for giving me their best efforts, I tell them about the 5 week simulation project I have planned for them at the end of the year. This is great motivation for them! I tell students that I’m watching closely, to see how they handle working together, to see if they will be ready for the simulation. This always intrigues them, and they are focused on giving me their best work!
In this post, you’ll discover 5 easy, low-prep projects and activities to challenge your students during your ancient China unit.
Activity #1 - Discover Inventions
There are soooo many inventions from ancient China! This project can be as in-depth or low-key as you desire.
Get students working in small groups or pairs to learn about all the technology. Provide them with informational texts – grab some from your library – and let them dive in!
Have students complete a simple organizer or something more elaborate like notebook-foldable activity or flip-book.

Activity #2 - Comprehensive Lap-book
If you are short on time, this is one of the best ways to make sure you get the best bang-for-your-buck! Do a comprehensive project that covers all the essential core concepts.
These Lap-book projects are the perfect answer. Students can work together to gather the information. Then they are held accountable for the information through completing their own project. And you can support your students by providing them with templates to help them complete their projects.
These project serve as a great way to hands-on review material AND they can even be used as a project based assessment if you need it to.

Activity #3 - Leveled Challenges
Any time you can meet students at their level, you are sure to build student confidence!
An easy way to do this, is to pair students according to their reading levels.
We all know how challenging it can be to find leveled reading materials, but there is something else you CAN do instead.
Give all students the same reading passage. Then provide leveled assignments. I like to put together activities that are at grade level, below grade level, and above grade level.

If you haven’t started giving your students choice, here’s your sign that you need to start!
Sometimes there is confusion about what student choice actually entails. It’s not about just letting students choose anything, it’s about giving them options to choose from.
These Student Project Choice Boards are a great way to give students guided options for choosing their own projects that encourage them to explore and taking their thinking to the next level.
